Georgian-German Doctoral Program in Mathematics

The Georgian-German joint doctoral program between Tbilisi State University and Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with the participation of A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute is directed by the Executive Board consisting of three Georgian and three German experts in mathematics; currently, its Georgian members are Omar Glonti, Hvedri Inassaridze and Tamaz Tadumadze, and German members are Ralf Meyer, Anita Schoebel and Anja Sturm.
The joint doctoral program includes two year master studies at Georgian universities for selected students and one year postgraduate study at Tbilisi State University. The doctoral degree can be earned normally in six years. The first three years are spent at Georgian Universities, the final three years in the School of Mathematical Sciences in Göttingen. The Executive Board may recommend in exceptional cases to reduce the one year postgraduate study at Tbilisi State University. By entrance examination the students' progress is evaluated before they transfer to Göttingen.
Students should be selected during master studies and some courses should be given in English for them. It is expected that up to five strong candidates per year will be provided with a tuition fee waiver for Tbilisi State University, German language courses, and a stipend to cover their living expenses during the one year postgraduate study in Tbilisi and the three year postgraduate study in Germany.
The applicants will, in general, have two thesis supervisors, one in Göttingen and one in Georgia.  Courses for the students in Tbilisi will usually be taught in English, by professors of Tbilisi State University and A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute, courses in Göttingen by professors of Göttingen University will also be in English by default.  In addition, block courses of professors from Göttingen in Tbilisi and vice versa may be offered.  Professors of Tbilisi State University, the A. Razmadze Mathematical Institute, and Göttingen University may be appointed as thesis supervisors and as examination committee members.  Thesis supervisors and the examination committee are appointed by the Georg-August-University School of Sciences (GAUSS) upon recommendation of the Executive Board.

Target group
